Instructions (Materials for our class - March 27, 2020). 

Hello. 

Here I will try to connect all the texts and videos for week 7
(I might reconnect with some concepts I mentioned in week
5: the last time we met “in person”). 

Between the weeks 5 and 7, the syllabus starts speaking
more about History of Arts, Cinema, Literature, and Philosophy. 

I would like you to follow these steps: 

1. A movie about WWI: Jules et Jim. Watch the trailer in the Blog.
(You can watch it in case you want to write your final paper
about it. The movie is not available on line. You should have
to rent it -or buy it- in Amazon.com)

2. Another option, if you are interested in WWI, is
La Grande Illusion, Renoir’s classic.Watch the trailer in the Blog.
  It is not available, and you should have to rent or buy it.

3. Read (from week 5, in the Blog) the Manifesto of Surrealism, by André Breton. 
Try to connect Breton’s “instructions” for the new Literature with
the narrative (or “anti-narrative”) style of An Andalusian Dog
(the movie by Buñuel and Dalí).

4. The main inheritor of the surrealist movement after WWII is Antonin Artaud.
Read the poem “The Nerve Metter” in the blog, and try to connect it
with Breton’s main ideas. If you want to write your final paper about
Artaud and Surrealism, you can watch the documentaries I posted in
the blog (Antonin Artaud - Documentary; and Antonin Artaud -
The Nerve Metter video). 


5. After World War II: the main intellectual figure after the liberation
of Paris from the Nazis was Jean Paul Sartre. Take a look at the
synthesis of his book Existentialism is a Humanism.
(In the blog: Sartre, week 7). If you are interested in knowing more
about Sartre, you can follow the link at the bottom of the post. 


6. Another very important figure was Simone De Beauvoir. Her book
The Second Sex is a cornestone for Feminist Theory. Take a look
at it in the Blog. If you want to write your final paper from a Feminist
perspective, this author whould be your main reference.

7. Story of Women (watch the trailer in the Blog). A movie about
abortion in the post WWII in France. You could write your final
paper analyzing this movie from the Feminist perspective.

If you want to go more deeply into Baudelaire, modernization, and the architectural changes of the City of Paris, you can read the chapter III of Marshal Berman's book: ALL THAT IS SOLID MELTS INTO AIR. The chapter III talks about Baudelaire and the new experiences of modernity and urbanization.

Discussion. 

1. What is the purpose of torture? 

2. Is torture coherent with absolutism? 

3. Why, according to Foucault, everything changes (from public execution to a “certain discretion in the art of inflicting pain”)? 

4. According to the author, between the end of eighteenth and the beginning of nineteenth century, punishment “leaves the domain of more or less everyday perception, and enters that of the abstract consciousness”. Try to explain the reasons for this evolution. 

5. What is the role of the hanging machine and the guillotine in all this process?

6. Explain the following idea: “The expiation that once rained down upon the body must be replaced by a punishment that acts in depth on the heart, the thought, the will, the inclinations.” (15)

7. Why does Foucault recommend to “regard punishment as a political tactic” (23)?
